I went to a small comprehensive school nestled in mid Berkshire and in the autumn of 1979 I was to have my first woodwork lesson. This as it transpired was to be quite a revelation for me. Once I had handled the rudimentary tools provided for the preparation of timber I knew regardless of where life took me I would always have an affinity with wood craft.
With a few lessons “under my belt” I was soon rummaging in the garage at home for my late father’s tools. Among other things I found a few chisels and a Stanley 4 ½” smoothing plane which I still use regularly. Fortunately, I don’t need as many plasters as I did back then!
I was successful in being chosen as one of the last fully indentured apprentices in carpentry & joinery. The company I did my apprenticeship with were specialists in purpose made joinery which gave me a wealth of experience in many aspects of the craft. In association with the accompanying City & Guilds qualifications I completed my training in four years.
Ultimately my career took a different path but I have always continued to make things for myself, as gifts and also undertaken the occasional commission.
